As we live our life, we sometimes experience and are faced with emotional difficulties and conflicts, which may affect how we function in our daily life. These problems may be to do with changed circumstances, relationship difficulties, or unexplained feelings, such as depression, anxiety or stress. Sometimes family members or friends offer or want to help, but they can be too emotionally involved, so that it seems difficult to clarify what is going on inside of you. Or you may feel that your feelings and problems are burden others.
Psychotherapy and counselling provide an opportunity to explore any difficulties or concerns that you have in a safe, supportive and confidential environment with someone professionally trained in listening. Therapy is a place to talk through, to untangle, clarify, thoughts and feelings and work together to find answers and directions that lead to the best outcome for the individual person.
I use the term ‘counselling’ to mean a more goal-oriented approach which usually looks at a particular issue in the short-term, whereas ‘psychotherapy’ explores issues more in depth and over a longer period, which leads to a better understanding about our feelings and attitudes.
